Job Description:

30%-Lead, supervise, & manage the large animal (LA) nursing staff. To include full-time, part-time, & student employees. Maintain a staff schedule that ensures appropriate technical staff coverage, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, including holidays, weekends, emergency closures, & coverage of requested leave. Work with the nursing director to recruit, interview, hire, & train new staff as well as conduct performance reviews & planning sessions with current staff. Hold staff accountable, documenting coaching conversations & following through with disciplinary write-ups as recommended by HRM. Work with clinical staff to ensure a cohesive relationship between technicians & clinicians. Provide orientation & training to students, technicians & house officers. Manage controlled drug audits. Provide guidance & support to LA lead workers.

30%-Provide technical veterinary support to faculty, house officers, technicians, and students throughout the large animal hospital by performing and teaching/instructing: Setting appointments, admitting patients, triaging and responding to emergencies. Providing patient care and case management including hourly checks and treatments, procedure set up and clean up following. Safely restraining patients including unloading and loading into stocks and trailers. Ensuring professional interaction with clients and proper communication and the receiving of information. Monitoring patients throughout the hospital, maintaining professional medical records, and capturing charges for inpatients and outpatients. Aid in generating estimates. Oversee procedures and treatments performed by veterinary students and ensure safety and accuracy.

20%-performing and teaching/instructing: a variety of procedures such as bandages, sample collections, venipuncture, medication administration, blood transfusion, ultrasound, joint injection, IVC placement, naso-gastric intubation, etc.

15%-coverage on weekends, holidays, and during emergency closures. Provide emergency on-call coverage. Delegate staff communication to a lead worker, the nursing director, or appropriate clinical lead in times when contact may be difficult. (i.e. on leave). Attend supervisor and applicable hospital leadership meetings.

5%-Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's Degree with 4 years of experience and 1 year of supervisory or administrative experience related to the duties of the job.

Degree Substitute: Associate's degree in veterinary technology with 4 years experience: OR Certification as a vet tech or equivalent with 4 years experience: OR 7 Years of experience in a working environment with similar duties.

Additional Information:

Required to work a variety of shifts including nights, weekends, holidays, and "on-call"/relief shifts.

This position may be required to report to campus in times of emergency and/or closure per PS-18.

Special Instructions:

The Large Animal Hospital operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. This person will provide technical veterinary support to faculty, house officers, and students throughout the large animal hospital while also providing management and leadership over full-time, part-time, and student technicians/assistants working within the area. It is essential that this person has expertise in handling livestock and is able to provide instruction to veterinary students on proper and safe handling of these potentially dangerous large animals. It is also essential that this person have demonstrated leadership skill and the ability to guide, motivate, and supervise a large group of people spanning multiple large animal services.

To include support for emergency cases seen during and after hours. To include proper adherence to infection control protocols. Areas of patient care and responsibilities include but are not limited to Large Animal isolation, resident teaching and research herd, food animal hospital, equine hospital, and the Large Animal ICU.
