A Day in the Life

The Structural Heart and Aortic (SH&A) integrated operating unit offers minimally invasive approaches to restore proper structure and function of the heart and the aorta. We focus on the transcatheter replacement or repair of the four heart valves—aortic, pulmonic, mitral, tricuspid—and the placement of stent grafts to treat aneurysms and dissections of the body’s largest artery, the aorta.

We are hiring a Senior Specialist to join the SH&A Medical Science team, reporting to the Program Director of Medical Science to assist in the acquisition, assimilation, and dissemination of clinical evidence for therapies. The Medical Science team evaluates the evidence landscape to tell a clinical story grounded in evidence with the intent of building physician confidence in our therapy knowledge and products, improving physician practice, and advancing patient care. You will play an important role in monitoring, analyzing, and communicating scientific literature and Congress presentations and developing communications for internal teams and external physician customers. You will partner closely with Physicians, and Clinical Research, Medical Education, Marketing, Communications teams to best leverage clinical evidence.

The Senior Specialist must be detail-oriented and self-motivated, with excellent analytic, facilitation, and communication skills (both oral and written). This role works collaboratively with nearly all functional groups within the Aortic business, including Marketing, Clinical, Medical Education, Regulatory, Research & Development, and Field-based Teams.

Preference is for this position to be based in Santa Rosa, CA or Minneapolis, MN. Remote will be considered for exceptional candidates.

Role and Responsibilities:

  • Develop/update/create physician MDT scientific presentations including symposia for major SH&A events/programs
    • Liaison between commercial and scientific teams, including physicians
    • Engage and provide feedback to physicians on potential research ideas/questions
  • Manage faculty development and physician advisory meetings
  • Facilitate Film Review program for physicians
  • Communicate and collaborate with our clinical, marketing, and field teams
  • Keep abreast of novel data, trends, leading developments, and technology by continuously monitoring published scientific literature and attending scientific conferences
  • Critically evaluate clinical publications and conference/congress presentations and integrate new findings into existing knowledge base
  • Participate in cross-functional literature review meetings to ensure all functions are aligned on the key clinical data
  • Maintain clinical evidence communication tool/s used by the global SH&A team

Responsibilities may include the following and other duties may be assigned:

  • Leverages medical/scientific expertise to address medical information (MI) inquiries from HCPs and internal personnel.
  • Collaborates and develops trusted relationships with key functions; drive and influence evidence-based, and scientifically accurate decision making across the matrix organization, including sharing the physician perspective based on medical science physician partnerships during content development, research collaboration, evidence projects, advisory meetings, etc
  • Develops and manages key/targeted physician relationships including acting as trusted scientific partner to physicians/faculty/KOLs to prepare them for Medtronic scientific/educational programs and develops Medtronic faculty through programs such as MFEs, and collects physician insights in advisory meetings
  • Plans and executes Medical Science programs, following our compliance, regulatory, and business conduct standards requirements
  • Demonstrates the ability to search, critically evaluate, and synthesize published medical and scientific literature, clinical study data, or other relevant data sources to address medical information inquiries.
  • Reviews scientific materials such as literature, abstracts, posters, manuscripts for publication, slides sets, and promotional materials for scientific content, off-label use considerations, claim substantiation, and fairness.
  • May author or contribute to research, writing, and editing of manuscripts, State of the Art assessments, and development of other scientific materials.

Must Have; Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Minimum of 4 years’ experience in a role involving developing communications for the scientific community (e.g., Medical Affairs, Clinical Research, and/or healthcare industry) and working directly with physicians as an industry representative
  • Or an Advanced degree with minimum of 2 years’ experience in a role involving developing communications for the scientific community (e.g., Medical Affairs, Clinical Research, and/or healthcare industry) and working directly with physicians as an industry representative

Nice to Have

  • Advanced degree (PhD, MD) with experience in the medical device industry
  • Experience in scientific communication and literature review searches
  • Experience creating professional podium presentations for scientific meetings
  • Publication experience in the cardiovascular disease space

Salary ranges for U.S (excl. PR) locations (USD):$117,600.00 - $176,400.00

This position is eligible for a short-term incentive called the Medtronic Incentive Plan (MIP).

The base salary range is applicable across the United States, excluding Puerto Rico and specific locations in California. The offered rate complies with federal and local regulations and may vary based on factors such as experience, certification/education, market conditions, and location. Compensation and benefits information pertains solely to candidates hired within the United States (local market compensation and benefits will apply for others).
