The Opportunity
This position works out of our Santa Clara, CA location in the Abbott Vascular Division. Abbott Vascular provides innovative, minimally invasive, and cost-effective products for treatment of vascular disease.
As a Senior Patent Paralegal, you will provide legal services and resolve legal matters for assigned responsibilities or clients. You will support the business in the achievement of business objectives by communicating advice of the Legal Department and managing legal risks to the corporation.
WHAT YOU’LL WORK ON
Possesses solid knowledge of Abbott’s businesses supported and knowledge of the broader business impact.
Represent Abbott externally to customers, suppliers, competitors, opposing counsel or government agencies; resolves legal issues using negotiation skills and legal experience involving more complex matters.
Helps select and/or directs the work of outside counsel, outside paralegals, contractors and vendors; defines project objectives and manages project.
Provides administrative support to Division IP Counsel and Senior Patent Counsel.
Has experience with:
U.S. and international patent application processes and timelines as well as the legal, business, and budgetary impact of various milestones between patent application filing and the expiration of a patent.
Freedom-to-Operate (“FTO”) analysis and the various legal, technical, and business inputs required to complete an FTO analysis.
Performs complex queries in the patent database and generates/analyzes reports from the patent database as requested.
With supervision, conducts Patent Governance meetings by convening appropriate stakeholders and developing reports that are used to make patent portfolio decisions, records minutes and decisions made at Patent Governance meetings for attorney review and ensures decisions are accurately recorded in the database for future execution.
Proficient at review and negotiation of standard agreements such as Confidentiality, Material Transfer, Investigator Initiated Studies, Clinical Study, and Services with minimal supervision.
Reviews more complex agreements with supervision from attorneys.
Executes core job responsibilities in a timely manner.
Assists other paralegals and/or attorneys in resolving complex legal issues on projects involving multiple disciplines within the Legal Division and/or multiple functional areas or divisions within Abbott.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor’s Degree and relevant legal education (Paralegal certificate).
6+ years of relevant experience.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Possess in-house IP experience, preferably in the medical device industry.
Proficient in area of responsibility.

The base pay for this position is
$83,500.00 – $153,300.00In specific locations, the pay range may vary from the range posted.
